Arcoxia UpLift is a presription drug for arthritis by Merck. To get their sales team up to speed on the benefits VCCP Health decided to create a game. I developed the characters for levels one and two.
This was a lot of fun! I got into the spirit of things by flicking through loads of Illustration books for style tips. Here’s the two ideas that came from that:
- Keep it fresh and bright (use dark colour, especially black, sparingly)
- Keep it flat (like paper cut-outs or screenprinting)
I handed them on to fellow VCCP’er Nathaniel Hully who did a great job animating them and incorporaing them into the game. You can see more about the game, including screengrabs, a very cool alien boss for level three and a video of the gameplay over at Nate’s website.

Is it possible this is the best crocodile ever? I love how his eyes fit into the pointy bits of his head.
These are great – they remind me of Tartakovsky, is that something you were going for?
I feel ignorant. I had to look up who he was! The flat simple shapes come from wanting to keep the complexity down for performance reasons (in the game). Love the look of the Star Wars stuff. :-)
