Wow! Has it really been ten years?

Ready for some old-skool Flash? Well Autotrader UK wanted to have a go at viral. So to promote getting a new car we proposed smashing up your old one. A quick google has it turn up on some forums (here and here), even though the link is long dead.

The Flash build

This game was created with a few tricks. The road was animated by rotating the verge MovieClips back and forth. To prevent the game slowing down when the PC couldn’t keep up I added a clip for measuring how long it took for the timeline to pass from second to second. Then altered the speed setting accordingly. Most visual states were controlled by gotoAndPlay or gotoAndStop. The direction of the bug had frames for front and three quarter views. The splats are frame-by-frame.

Look and feel

It all started with the bug. Once I had the manic look on his face I know I had to design a crazy, jittery, green logotype to match. I added the cat as extra. Originally I wanted hitting the cat to be big bonus points. The client was less enthusiastic about the idea, but desided to keep the cat provided it was a penalty.

There’s a copy of the game here for those of you who have Flash Player installed.
